While in suspended animation, Jean Gray was taken over by an entity calling herself the Phoenix. The being replicated her appearance and personality so exactly that even her closest friends were fooled into believing she had merely acquired new powers.

As Marvel Girl, Jean Gray joined the first group of X-Men. During one adventure she died, or at least fell into a state of suspended animation.

Boris did series of advertisements for Joe Weider a body-builder and entrepreneur and publisher of magazines such as 'Muscle & Fitness and Shape'. Boris a body-builder himself at that time was delighted to work for him.

This preliminary drawing for the painting Mars was a private commission based on the 1917 novel A Princess of Mars by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. A film John Carter Of Mars (based on the novel) was made a few years after this painting was completed.

Boris emigrated to the USA in 1964, this drawing is dated the same year. It was done whilst still in Peru and formed part of Boris' portfolio. In interview Boris says 'At the time I thought it was really terrific and was gonna show everybody who I was' (laughter).

The model for this mermaid was an old friend from Julie's bodybuilding days. They had worked together in the eighties as personal trainers at a gym in rural Pennsylvania.

The Vallejo/Palumbo team finally gained the impetus to complete the project when beginning in November 2007 Heavy Metal Magazine featured four Tarot paintings per issue over the next twenty-two issues, ending in May 2011.
